Inizia un nuovo capitolo per l’International Flight Training School (IFTS) di Decimomannu, con la sigla del “Concept of Operations (CONOPS) for Flight Training of the USAF Military Personnel in Italy”. L’accordo, firmato il 22 agosto 2025 in modalità disgiunta dal Capo di Stato Maggiore dell’Aeronautica Militare, Generale di Squadra Aerea Antonio Conserva e dal Lieutenant General Brian S. Robinson, Comandante dell’Air Education & Training Command della U.S. Air Force, sancisce una svolta epocale: per la prima volta nella storia dell’aviazione militare americana, l’USAF ha scelto una scuola all’estero, in un Paese NATO, per l’addestramento dei propri piloti.
La scelta è ricaduta sull’IFTS, struttura unica al mondo, per la sua comprovata eccellenza e la capacità di offrire un percorso addestrativo innovativo e sfidante. Il velivolo T-346A, simile al T-7 che sarà il nuovo trainer dell’USAF, ha rappresentato un ulteriore punto di forza alla base di questa intesa.
L’arrivo di 10 frequentatori americani presso la base di Decimomannu rappresenta una nuova importante pietra miliare per la scuola. L’inedito percorso formativo strutturato sul “Multiphase Jet Training Integrated Syllabus“, creato ad hoc dall’Aeronautica Militare in sinergia con l’USAF, consentirà agli allievi di conseguire il Brevetto di Pilota Militare sul velivolo T-346A in circa nove mesi.
L’International Flight Training School nasce dalla collaborazione strategica tra l’Aeronautica Militare e Leonardo per la realizzazione di un centro avanzato di addestramento al volo destinato a costituire un punto di riferimento internazionale nell’addestramento dei piloti militari per la Fase IV (Advanced/Lead-In to Fighter Training). L’IFTS si avvale di un syllabus modulare, molto versatile, imperniato sull’innovativo T-346A Integrated Training System, sistema particolarmente efficace per la formazione di piloti destinati ad un’ampia gamma di caccia delle ultime generazioni, tra cui gli F-35, gli Eurofighter e i Gripen.
Questo vero e proprio Air Campus è in grado di ospitare allievi e personale tecnico, dotata anche di aree ricreative, mensa, impianti sportivi, infrastrutture logistico-manutentive capaci di gestire una flotta di 22 velivoli T-346A. Un intero edificio, inoltre, è dedicato all’avanzatissimo Ground Based Training System (GBTS), un moderno sistema di addestramento basato su sistemi di simulazione di ultima generazione.
Il progetto si inserisce nel quadro dell’ampliamento dell’offerta addestrativa nazionale a livello internazionale ed è gestito dal 212° Gruppo Volo/IFTS, articolazione del 61° Stormo di Galatina, dislocata presso la base aerea di Decimomannu.

FLIGHT TRAINING, IFTS: HISTORIC AGREEMENT SIGNED FOR USAF PILOT TRAINING IN ITALY
The first American student pilots will soon be at the International Flight Training School in Decimomannu
A new chapter begins for the International Flight Training School (IFTS) in Decimomannu, with the signing of the “Concept of Operations (CONOPS) for Flight Training of the USAF Military Personnel in Italy.”
The agreement, signed separately on August 22, 2025, by the Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force, Lieutenant General Antonio Conserva, and Lieutenant General Brian S. Robinson, Commander of the U.S. Air Force Air Education & Training Command, marks a historic turning point: for the first time in the history of the American military aviation, the USAF has chosen a foreign school, in a NATO country, to train its pilots.
The IFTS, a unique facility worldwide, was chosen for its proven excellence and ability to offer an innovative and challenging training program. The T-346A aircraft, similar to the T-7, which will be the USAF’s new trainer, represented a further strength behind this agreement.
The arrival of 10 American students at the Decimomannu base represents another important milestone for the school. The new training program, structured around the “Multiphase Jet Training Integrated Syllabus,” created specifically by the Italian Air Force in collaboration with the USAF, will allow students to earn their Military Pilot License on the T-346A aircraft in approximately nine months.
The International Flight Training School was born from a strategic collaboration between the Italian Air Force and Leonardo to create an advanced flight training center intended to become an international benchmark for military pilot training Phase IV (Advanced/Lead-In to Fighter Training). The IFTS uses a highly versatile, modular syllabus centered on the innovative T-346A Integrated Training System, a particularly effective system for training pilots for a wide range of latest-generation fighters, including the F-35, Eurofighter, and Gripen.
This fully-fledged Air Campus can accommodate students and technical staff, and is also equipped with recreational areas, a cafeteria, sports facilities, and logistics and maintenance infrastructure capable of managing a fleet of 22 T-346A aircraft. Furthermore, an entire building is dedicated to the highly advanced Ground Based Training System (GBTS), a modern training system based on latest-generation simulation systems.
The project is part of the expansion of the national training offering at an international level and is managed by the 212th Flight Group/IFTS, an articulation of the 61st Galatina Wing, located at the Decimomannu air base.
