Derivato dal P-80, primo caccia a reazione operativo statunitense, il T-33 fu sviluppato come biposto da addestramento.
Il prototipo volò il 22 marzo 1948 ed entro l’estate 1959 ne furono prodotti oltre 5.600 esemplari.
Di questi molti operarono, oltre che con l’US Air Force, con le forze aeree di paesi NATO.
Dall’autunno 1952 ne fu dotata l’Aeronautica Militare che ricevette, oltre a 60 biposto T-33A, 14 esemplari monoposto RT-33A da ricognizione fotografica.
