Derived from the P-80, the first US operational jet fighter, the T-33 was developed as a two-seat trainer.
The prototype flew on 22 March 1948 and by the summer of 1959, over 5,600 examples had been produced.
Of these, many operated, as well as with the US Air Force, with the air forces of NATO countries.
From the autumn of 1952, the Italian Air Force was equipped with it, receiving, in addition to 60 two-seater T-33As, 14 single-seater RT-33A photographic reconnaissance aircraft.
