Three military aircraft and one civilian aircraft stopped at the Brindisi Airport Detachment. An Ilyushin IL-76TD aircraft, which arrived in Brindisi from Palma de Mallorca (Spain), after ground handling operations, customs activities, and refuelling, took off for Beirut International Airport (Lebanon), carrying United Nations materials.
Three Eurofighter EF 2000 Typhoon fighter jets from the Royal Air Force (RAF), departing from Akrotiri (Isle of Cyprus), after refuelling, took off for Grosseto Airport for a technical stop before reaching Coningsby base (Great Britain).
The Salento Department, under the Logistic Command, provides support for the “peacekeeping” operations of the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) and “humanitarian” operations of the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD).
The geographical position, as well as the configuration of the intersecting runways, which allow take-off and landing operations in all wind conditions, enable the Brindisi airport to support the flight activity of aircraft coming from and going to various areas of operation.
Finally, the Detachment provides air navigation services to civil aviation and to passing NATO aircraft, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It also carries out the Command functions of the Aeronautical Garrison through logistical and administrative support to the Armed Forces entities in the Brindisi area.
