The Air Force ensures the surveillance and defence of national airspace 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, with an integrated defence system, which has been in place since peacetime, with that of other NATO member countries. 

PA 200 - TORNADO

PA 200 - Tornado

The PA 200 – Tornado is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing, all-weather combat aircraft, of entirely European design and construction, which entered service with the Italian Air Force in 1982. Initially acquired in the Interdiction Strike (IDS) version (Aeronautical nomenclature A-200A and TA-200A for dual-control training variants), the Tornado later saw some aircraft upgraded to the IT-ECR (Electronic Combat Reconnaissance) standard (aeronautical nomenclature EA-200B), specialising in the suppression of enemy air defences through the use of AGM-88 HARM air-to-surface missiles.

Built by the trinational Panavia consortium, comprising Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany, it has been continuously updated to maintain its operational relevance in contemporary scenarios. It remains in service with only the 6th Wing, which employs aircraft brought up to the Mid Life Upgrade standard (aerospace nomenclature A-200C/TA-200B).

Tornado

The Tornado is a twin-engine, two-seat, variable-geometry wing combat aircraft, all-weather capable, designed and built entirely in Europe, which entered service with the Italian Air Force in 1982. Initially acquired in the interdiction strike (IDS) version (aeronautical designation A-200A and TA-200A for twin-seat training aircraft), some Tornado aircraft were later upgraded to the IT-ECR (Electronic Combat Reconnaissance) standard (EA-200B), specialised in suppressing enemy air defences through the use of AGM-88 HARM air-to-surface missiles.

Typhoon F-2000A

The F-2000 A fighter (military designation EF-2000 Typhoon) is the most advanced combat aircraft developed on the European continent, capable of offering wide-ranging operational capabilities and unparalleled effectiveness in Air Defence. The aircraft is on national alert status, guaranteed by the Air Force units for 24-hour Air Defence, 365 days a year. In just a few minutes, it ensures fighters can take off to intercept and identify any suspicious aerial trace detected by radar. The F-2000A, which has recently also acquired air-to-ground capabilities, is the result of industrial collaboration between Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.

Eurofighter Typhoon

The Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet (aeronautical nomenclature F-2000A) is the most advanced combat aircraft developed on the European continent, capable of offering wide-ranging operational capabilities and unparalleled effectiveness in the Air Defence sector. The aircraft is part of the national Quick Reaction Alert service, guaranteed by the Italian Air Force’s Air Defence units 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which ensures the scramble of fighters within minutes to intercept and identify any suspicious aerial tracks detected by radar. The Eurofighter, which has recently also acquired air-to-ground capabilities, is the result of industrial collaboration between Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

The F-35 is a fifth-generation weapon system with a range of operational capabilities that allow it to simultaneously and autonomously perform all missions in air tactician doctrine. The state-of-the-art technology applied to its onboard sensors and the aircraft's low observability (reduced capability of being detected by radar) increase its operational effectiveness, ensuring not only higher levels of survivability in hostile territories but also a high awareness and understanding of the tactical scenario.

The aircraft's high capabilities for discovery, identification and engagement precision give it outstanding potential. This, combined with innovative communication and real-time sharing of essential information (Net-Centric capabilities), provides the pilot with unrivalled theatre of operations management. The Italian Air Force possesses both the F-35A, conventionally taking off and landing (CTOL) versions, and the F-35B, short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) versions, for use on austere runways as well as amphibious assault ships, helicopter carriers and aircraft carriers (LHA/LHD/CV). Refuelling and Transport

Transport has always been the “job” of the 46th Air Wing's aircrafta The Pisa Air Brigade and, primarily on long-range routes, the cargo/tanker aircraft of the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare (Rome), which also meet in-flight refuelling requirements. The importance of these assets, vital for the Armed Force, has grown exponentially with the projection of the national military instrument “out of area”. There is no location on the planet where our contingents are deployed that is not periodically reached by C-130J Hercules and C-27J Spartan aircraft, which, even in threatening situations, are capable of guaranteeing their resupply and rotation. The Air Force's transport aircraft make it possible to create and sustain over time that network of air links that acts as a “hyphen”with the most important “out-of-area” operational theatres. In addition to use in the field of humanitarian aid and civil protection, the Air Force is engaged in “bio-containment air transport” and the sanitary transport of the sick and injured, as well as patients requiring organ transplants. The latter is an activity that, given the ’imminent danger to life“ of those being transported, requires a level of readiness comparable to that of Air Defence fighters or SAR (Search And Rescue), twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Airbus VC-319A is a twin-engine airliner modified for corporate transport, with a specific interior layout and auxiliary fuel tanks that increase its range compared to the commercial version.

The VC-319A was the first aircraft in the Italian Air Force to be certified for executing ILS (Instrument Landing System) CAT3 approaches, meaning in zero vertical and horizontal visibility, and is capable of automatically landing and stopping on the runway.

The interior layout consists of four areas: a conference room, a high-comfort rest area reserved for the highest authorities on board, the passenger compartment, and the crew rest compartment. The VC-319A features a fly-by-wire control system that receives input from two side-sticks. The instrumentation includes two autopilots, two Flight Directors, an Autothrust for automatic power regulation during various flight phases, a digital electronic data display system, and a Head-Up Display (HUD) to facilitate landings on unassisted runways and take-offs in low-visibility conditions.

It is designed and built in Germany by the Airbus Group.

C-27J Spartan

The C-27J Spartan is an Italian-designed and manufactured medium tactical transport aircraft in service with the Italian Air Force. Equipped with AE2100 engines and numerous C-130J components, the C-27J is particularly versatile and flexible in its use, and can effectively perform tactical transport missions, even operating from semi-prepared or damaged runways. This aircraft guarantees airborne supply missions for materiel and paratroopers, as well as medical evacuation missions. The configuration in service with the Italian Air Force is very extensive and complete, including an advanced data projection system with a digital map and a dual HUD (Head Up Display), an air-to-air refuelling system, and a DASS (Defensive Aids Sub System) self-protection system. One example has been modified to the YEC-27J JEDI configuration for jamming and electronic warfare.

Designed by Alenia Aeronautica based on the Aeritalia G.222, it is built by Leonardo Aircraft.

It has one of the most sophisticated onboard electronic systems for aircraft in its category and accommodates more passengers than the VC-50A (Falcon 50). The VC-900A (Falcon 900EX) can operate from small airports at high altitudes, even in high external temperatures. It is among the most versatile and safest aircraft thanks to its low approach speed, lower than that of its twin-engine competitors. The onboard instrumentation offers pilots the ability to easily follow mission progress, while the spacious cabin ensures passengers a high level of comfort during the flight. The EASy (Enhanced Avionics System) version is equipped with LCD screens that allow for faster reading of flight parameters.

It boasts onboard electronics among the most sophisticated for aircraft in its class and accommodates more passengers than the Falcon 50. The Falcon 900EX can operate from small, high-altitude airports even in high external temperatures. It is among the most versatile and safest aircraft thanks to its low approach speed, lower than that of twin-engine competitors. KC-767A

The KC-767A is the aerial refuelling and transport variant of the 767-200 Extended Range commercial aircraft. The aircraft can be configured in three different layouts, with a payload of up to 25,000 kg: the CARGO configuration can carry 19 standard NATO military pallets; the FULL PAX configuration accommodates up to 192 passengers with their luggage, and the COMBI configuration carries up to 100 passengers and 10 standard NATO military pallets.

In all its configurations, the KC-767A ensures a high flight range and payload capacity, also thanks to its aerial refuelling capability to extend its operational radius. As a tanker, it is fitted with systems compatible with Italian and allied aircraft. Its capabilities include: a boom system with a rigid boom and a refuelling rate of up to 4,091 litres per minute; a centreline hose-and-drogue system with a rate of up to 2,727 litres per minute; wingtip hose-and-drogue systems with a rate of up to 1,818 litres per minute; and a universal receptacle with a refuelling rate of up to 4,091 litres per minute.

The aircraft is designed and built by Boeing in the United States, with an industrial share of 15% from Aeritalia, now Leonardo Aircraft.

The VC-180A (military designation of the P.180) is a twin-turboprop aircraft used by the Air Force for the training and instruction of military pilots destined for the Armed Force's transport lines, for radio measurement and liaison activities, and for the requirements of the Civil Protection Department. Originally produced for the civil executive market, the VC 180A offers the performance of a turbofan aircraft in the same category but with the economy of turboprop engines.

The inspiring concept behind the project is the pursuit of maximum efficiency, particularly evident in the flowing lines of the fuselage and the continuous shape of the nose profile, along with large-sized glazed surfaces. The pusher propellers ensure low noise levels in the cabin. The aircraft offers the opportunity to practise asymmetric flight and allows for a transition from basic operation to full operational use through the implementation of numerous onboard automated systems.

It is designed and built entirely in Italy by Piaggio Aerospace.

Among the peculiar activities carried out by the Air Force, particular importance is attached to all selection, training and education activities for its own personnel and for other Armed Forces and/or Military Corps concerning air navigation. A low-wing, single-engine monoplane of all-metal construction of Italian design and manufacture, the U-208A (military designation of the S.208M) is used by the Air Force for liaison and glider towing.

It derives from the S.205 four-seater, designed in the mid-1960s by SIAI-Marchetti, with five seats and a higher-powered engine, the prototype, designated S.208, first flew on 22 May 1967.

The version intended for the Armed Forces differs from the civilian version in its modified onboard instrumentation, the two doors for the cockpit, the possibility of fitting a glider towing hook, and the lack of wingtip fuel tanks. It is used for glider towing.

The T-339 (military designation MB.339) is a light training and attack aircraft, used by the Air Force in three versions: T-339A, AT-339A (PAN), and FT-339C (CD). A successor to the MB.326, the MB.339 is characterised by its raised rear seat, which is essential for providing the instructor with good visibility, especially during armed training exercises. It can also be used for close air support missions.

Version A is used for Air Force student pilots undertaking Phase II (Primary Pilot Training).

The PAN variant has proven to be very effective for the Tricolours' aerobatic display.

The CD (Completely Digital) variant is an updated and improved avionics version, used for Phase III Fighter Track and Remotely Piloted Aircraft, aimed exclusively at student pilots selected for the Fighter and “remotely piloted” streams.

The main difference between the CD and A versions is the instrumentation: 3 colour multifunction displays and a head-up display in both cockpits. The CD can also be used for Air Defence duties to counter low-speed, low-altitude aerial threats, such as those from a potential terrorist attack.

It was designed and built entirely in Italy by Aermacchi.

It T-345A It is a military training aircraft designed to meet the operational requirements of modern air forces, combining high performance, economic sustainability, and advanced technological capabilities. Currently employed in the Phase II the training path of military pilots, it is also destined to progressively replace the T-339C in the Stage III, contributing to a continuous and efficient training path.

Integrated into a wider training system which includes the T-346A for the Stage IV (Lead In to Fighter Training – LIFT), the T-345A allows a smooth transition to next-generation combat systems, reducing overall training times and costs.

The aircraft features advanced digital avionics, with three multifunction displays (MFDs), a Head-Up Display (HUD), and HOTAS controls, offering an operating environment consistent with that of front-line aircraft. The integration of Ground Based Training System (GBTS) allows deployment in simulated scenarios, both in flight and on the ground, enhancing training effectiveness.

Propelled by a turbofan engine Williams FJ44-4M-34, the T-345A It represents a training platform that is advanced, reliable, and flexible, in line with the operational needs of the armed forces of the present and the future.

The T-346A twin-engine jet (military designation of the Aermacchi M-346) is the most advanced pre-operational trainer currently in service worldwide. With fully digital flight controls and avionics, and carefree handling at high angles of attack, the T-346A is designed for training pilots destined for Fourth and Fifth Generation aircraft. It also offers significant savings because a large part of the training programme previously carried out on more demanding aircraft can be completed on it.

The T-346A is an integrated training system comprising, in addition to the aircraft itself, a ground segment made up of various simulation systems. The system's flagship LVC (Live, Virtual and Constructive) philosophy enables pilots to operate simultaneously and in a combined manner in real flight (Live) and on various types of simulators (Virtual), interfacing with all types of computer-generated threat forces (Constructive).

It is used for Phase IV of training (Lead In to Fighter Training - LIFT), preparatory to subsequent deployment on Fighter aircraft.

It was designed and built entirely in Italy by Alenia Aermacchi, now Leonardo Aircraft.

The Italian Air Force's helicopter component is called upon to carry out a wide range of operations. Its task is to effectively ensure air search and rescue services, both for institutional duties of possible recovery of crews and military personnel in difficulty, and for activities supporting the community in cases of emergency medical flights, natural disasters, and major national events. It also provides air support for Special Operations and conducts training activities.

The HH-139, the military version of the AW.139, a medium-class twin-engine multi-role helicopter, is used by the Italian Air Force in the VH-139A state transport version (31st Wing), HH-139A air rescue version, and the further improved HH-139B. It is capable of operating both day and night, thanks to the use of Night Vision Goggles (NVGs), in particularly demanding areas, even from unprepared surfaces, in dusty environments, snowy regions, or at sea. Within 30 minutes, the internal configuration can be changed, transitioning from air rescue (primary SAR version: 5 passengers + 1 stretcher) to urgent medical air rescue (MEDEVAC version: 2 to 4 stretchers) or passenger transport (UTILITY version: up to 14 passengers).

The HH-139B version is equipped with a dual winch which increases system reliability and safety during recovery operations, and a mission console for better management of on-board equipment for search and rescue. The avionics and on-board sensors have been updated, such as the AIS (Automatic Identification System) for better interaction with naval vessels, and the OPLS (Obstacle Proximity LIDAR System) which aids in the identification and separation from orographic obstacles.

The widespread adoption of the AW.139 family, designed and built in Italy by AgustaWestland (now Leonardo Helicopters), allows for significant synergies – training, logistical, and operational – between different services and agencies in air rescue and other roles.

The TH-500B, military designation of the Nardi-Hughes NH-500E, is a light, five-bladed, single-engine helicopter used for training and liaison. It is characterised by its high operational flexibility and versatility, and is employed by the Italian Air Force in a configuration that allows for comprehensive training capabilities. In addition to training duties, it can undertake missions in support of SAR (Search And Rescue) operations, personnel, cargo or casualty transport, rescue operations, defence of military bases and installations, live firing training, reconnaissance, observation, and liaison. It has the ability to operate over bodies of water with the use of fixed floats and on snowy surfaces with special ski landing gear.

It is employed by the 72nd Wing of Frosinone, the only rotary-wing school in Italy for the training of helicopter pilots for the Air Force, other Armed Forces, and State Armed Corps, as well as for foreign attendees.

Reconnaissance and Surveillance

The military response to the transversality and unpredictability of future threats, primarily terrorism, but also the use of weapons of mass destruction and regional instability, requires adequate knowledge and information capabilities. More than in any other sector, these resources benefit from the extraordinary opportunities offered by modern technologies. Reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities enable “real time” support for air and surface forces, and contribute in “near real time” to the creation of an overall intelligence picture.

The Predator B is a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition missions. The weapon system comprises three main elements. The aircraft, equipped with a high-performance turboprop engine; the Ground Control Station (GCS), a ground control station that can control the aircraft during operations even hundreds of kilometres away via a satellite link; the Exploitation Data Station (EDS), where images received from the aircraft are analysed in real-time and transmitted to operational users via a telecommunications node.

The Predator B offers high performance in both ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) missions and, in maritime and land environments, in patrol, search, and rescue operations. The electro-optical, infrared, and radar sensors located under the fuselage provide unique observation and detection capabilities, able to operate even at night. The control station is a veritable ground-based cockpit, connected via antennas and receivers capable of communicating with the aircraft even via satellite.

It is designed and built entirely in the USA.

The E-550A aircraft (military designation of the G-550 CAEW “Conformal Airborne Early Warning”) is the most advanced multi-sensor system with airborne surveillance, command, control, and communications functions in service with European air forces.

The AEW-BM&C (Airborne Early Warning, Battlefield Management & Communication) capability is in fact today an indispensable tool to ensure an adequate extension of the national airspace surveillance capability (Homeland Defence/Security). The heart of the CAEW, obtained by installing the Elta EL/W-2085 electronic scanning radar system on the airframe, integrated with further electronic systems (COMINT, ELINT, ESM, IFF, RWR) to offer high Situational Awareness in real time, at 360° and at long range. The mission system has Maritime Patrol and Battlefield Management capabilities, thanks to its compatibility with the Rover systems of personnel deployed on land or on the sea surface (through the transmission of images, including video, useful for interpreting the environment in which they are operating). With the capacity to embark almost 19 tonnes of fuel, it has the ability to stay on target for long periods of time depending on mission parameters, with absolutely significant maximum flight altitudes and transfer speeds.
