To become an athlete in the Italian Air Force Sports Centre, it is necessary to pass a public competition based on sports achievements. The winners of the competition are enlisted as troop soldiers with a four-year fixed-term contract (“VFP4 – Athlete”). These competitions are announced periodically by the Ministry of Defence based on the staffing needs of the various disciplines and are intended for athletes with competitive results at least at a national level, recognised by CONI or the National Sports Federations.

After initial military training, they are put in a position to carry out their tasks to the best of their ability and dedicate themselves to work that can lead them to achieve success for themselves, our Armed Forces and for Italy.

Within the sporting pathway for elite athletes, which involves coordinated preparation by the National Sports Federations and CONI [Italian National Olympic Committee], Federal Technical Centres and suitable facilities for various disciplines are also used. Athletes are summoned to these centres for training sessions and gather for various training camps.
