10 tons of humanitarian aid were sent to Syria and Jordan from the UN base in Brindisi. The humanitarian aid, sent on behalf of the General Directorate for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was transported by two Antonov aircraft of Ukrainian nationality to be delivered to the Jordanian authorities in Amman (Jordan) and to the staff of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Damascus (Syria), for subsequent distribution to the victims of violence in Syria. The first aircraft, from the company Meridain Airlines, coming from Sarajevo (Bosnia Herzegovina), landed in Brindisi at 20:15 on Tuesday and, after the loading operations, departed at 08:19 on Thursday towards Damascus. The second aircraft, belonging to the company Shovkoviy Shlyah Ltd, landed in Brindisi at 14:45 on Wednesday, coming from Hassi (Algeria) and departed at 17:15 the same day. The operation was assisted by the Head of the VI Emergency Office of the Italian Cooperation for Development Ministry, Plenipotentiary Minister Bruno Antonio Pasquino, who was received by the Commander of the Detachment, Colonel Giambattista Degiuli. On this occasion, the Minister thanked the Air Force for the continuous support provided to the humanitarian activities carried out by the World Food Programme.
The Brindisi Detachment, under the command of the Deputy Logistics Commander, provides support for the “peacekeeping” and humanitarian operations of the “United Nations Global Service Center” (UNGSC) and the “World Food Programme” (WFP), ensuring 24/7 assistance to the aircraft of NATO countries passing through.
