The Italian Air Force participated in the NATO exercise NTDLIOT 24-02 dedicated to the interoperability of C2 systems with other allied nations.
From 7th to 18th October’Italian Air Force took part in the NATO Tactical Data Link Interoperability Test (NTDLIOT 24-02) exercise dedicated to testing the interoperability of Command and Control (C2) systems used by Alliance member countries.
Specifically, the exercise is based on the concept of Continuous Improvement, meaning conducting tests and resolving hardware, software, or procedural issues concerning the data exchange of C2 systems used by Armed Forces of the various countries NATO who are participating in the event for operational scenario management.
Within the scope of Not to do it, old chap., which takes place every six months, both new implementations concerning the Command and Control systems in use and modifications to be made to the relevant NATO STANAGs (Standard Agreements) are defined.
The exercise is carried out within the Re.G.I.S.C.C. Battle Lab, where data and the results of the conducted tests are shared among all participating countries via a secure and controlled computer network, known precisely as the Combined Federated Battle Lab Network.
In this second 2024 edition, which saw the participation of the technical staff of the Command and Control Systems Management and Innovation Department and also involved, as an operational component, that of Airspace Control Training Department, both located at Pratica di Mare Airport, the tests focused on new interoperability methods between the C2 systems necessary for the correct dissemination of Rap (Recognised Air Picture), a tool that provides decision-makers with a comprehensive and up-to-date view of what is happening in the airspace of a specific Area of Operations.
The results obtained from the checks will be used to refine procedures and technical tools adopted by all countries, through the release of new software versions concerning CIS systems used in the field. NATO to guarantee Command and Control functions.
The Command and Control Systems Management and Innovation Department, established in 2009 at the Pratica di Mare site and reporting to the 3rd Division of the Logistic Command, ensures the management of systems supporting Air Force Command and Control (C2) and C4-ISR functions, guaranteeing their configuration control and promoting innovation through development and experimentation activities.
