In recent days, the 71st has been held in Singapore International Congress of Aerospace Medicine (ICASM), which was attended by six officers from the Air Force Medical Corps to present research work carried out by the’Institute of Aerospace Medicine of Rome.

Over 500 scientists and experts from the aeromedical sector, hailing from over 80 countries, tackled the event's theme through panels and interactive discussions: “Towards new horizons in aeronautical and space medicine”.

Four panels were proposed, which took turns over the days of the congress, presenting clinical cases with significant implications for flight suitability assessments:“Nasal Polyps in Flight Personnel: Traditional Therapeutic Approach or Biological Treatment“;“Comparative study of diagnostic techniques for dyschromatopsia currently used for flight suitability assessment“;“Assessment of Dengue Risk in Italian Air Force Personnel: Current Practice and Prospects“;“Challenges in colour vision, literature on new methods for the description and identification of deficiencies“.

The scientific programme highlighted the latest advances and new trends in Aviation and Space Medicine with a significant focus on Aviation Ophthalmology and the aeromedical risk assessment in the flight of pilots and crews. Among the presentations particularly appreciated during the session of Aviation Medicine on behalf of the Italian delegation, the one dedicated to vestibular and stabilometric results in cervical pain and vertebral injuries in pilots. Further topics discussed were the increase in average lifespan along with the traditional themes of human factor, to operational fatigue management and aerophysiological training.

The delegation, led by the Brigadier General Pasquale Musolino, Director of IMA Rome, was welcomed by the’Italian Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency Dante Braschi and at the Changi Aeromedical Diagnostic Centre“ for a technical visit offered to the military delegations participating in the congress.

The presence of the Italian delegation is an example of how the Air Force continues to be an authoritative voice in the scientific and technological field, with the constant objective of improving progress and knowledge in the field of Aeronautical and Space Medicine.
