In the presence of General D.A. Claudio Gabellini, commander of the higher-ranking Aerospace Operations Command (COA) In the presence of a large representation of employees, guests and invitees, the ceremony for the change at the top took place on September 27th at the Poggio Renatico (FE) base. Aerospace Control Brigade (ACB).

Brigadier General Giuseppe Mega, after more than two years in command of the BCA, has handed over command to Brigadier General Glauco Luigi Mora, who has become the new Commander of the COA's unit.

In General Mega's farewell speech, it could not have been overlooked how the main distinguishing feature of his command period coincided with the start of a new “era” for a sector so fundamental to the operational capabilities of the Air Force.

It is worth remembering, in fact, that in 2021 the creation of the BCA was intended to respond (“with foresight”, as highlighted) to the need to identify a “single point of contact for the Italian Air Force for Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) and Air Traffic Management (ATM)”, including training and deployment aspects. General Mega referred to the BCA as “Common house of Air and Air Traffic Defence Controllers”.

“Airspace control remains, today as in the past – and the ongoing conflict proves it – a central activity at both national and NATO level to guarantee the security of the skies and thus safeguard the integrity of national and Alliance borders”. These are the most significant words spoken by General Glauco Mora, a few minutes after being formally recognised as the new Commander.

The highest authority present at the ceremony, Air Force General Claudio Gabellini, noted how, consolidated by its first Commander and with the “sap” of a new command, today the BCA owns “a dimension of its own, a relevance of its own and a coherent structure, fully capable of fulfilling its function in the delicate world of C2, the true backbone of a modern Air Force.

The BCA directly oversees the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Department (ReDAMI) based in Poggio Renatico, the Air Force Coordination and Control Services Department (RSCCAM) in Ciampino, the Mobile Command and Control Department (RMCC) in Bari, the Airspace Control Training Department (RACSA) based in Pratica di Mare, and the Italian Military Aviation Representation (RAMI) in Geilenkirchen, Germany. The BCA also maintains a technical link with the 2nd Air Wing in Rivolto and the 14th Air Wing in Pratica di Mare concerning the activities of their Missile Defence and Conformal Airborne Early Warning (CAEW) assets.
