During the multiple training activities carried out in both national and international contexts, the Eurofighters of the 4th Wing have been deployed in very diverse situations, from the Arctic cold of Iceland to the scorching heat of Kuwait and India. These circumstances have made it possible to verify the performance of the platform and its systems under operational conditions.
The Wing is equipped with both the single-seat and two-seat versions, the former used by the IX Group and the latter by the 20th Group, which acts as an Operational Conversion Unit (O.C.U.).
The Eurofighter “Typhoon” represents the result of a quadrilateral collaboration between governments and industries (Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain) that has made it possible to create an advanced multi-role fighter, used by the 4th Wing since 2004.
The Unit is engaged in the Air Space alert service, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, through the use of the Eurofighter aircraft and the continuous commitment of the men and women of the Wing. Since the events of 11 September 2001, the surveillance of Italian skies has become a priority activity of exceptional importance. On various occasions, the pilots of the 4th Wing, using EFA 2000 aircraft, have intervened to carry out the mission assigned to the Unit, distinguishing themselves for their professionalism and rapidity of intervention.
The 4th Wing reports directly to the Combat Forces Command based in Milan, which in turn reports to the Air Squad Command based in Rome, acting as the Top-tier Armed Force Command.
