Republic F-84G

The first F-84 took to the air in February 1946, proving to be good enough to be put into production straight away. The “G” version was introduced in June 1951, with a J35-A-29 engine producing 2,542 kg of thrust.

The first F84-G Thunderjets were assigned to the Air Force in the spring of 1952, specifically to the 5th Wing.

Alongside operational use, the “Thunderjets” experienced an exciting period of aerial acrobatics. In 1953, two aerobatic teams were formed on the F-84G, both comprising four aircraft.

The first, created within the 5th Air Brigade, took its name “Guizzo” from the call sign of its 103rd Group. It debuted in April 1953 at Villafranca (Verona) before taking over, on June 1st, from the “Cavallino Rampante” in the role of the National Aerobatic Patrol (PAN).

The second, the “White Tigers” of the 51st Air Brigade, became the PAN in 1955.

The F-84Gs were withdrawn from service in parallel with the delivery of the higher-performing F84-Fs.

The Italian Air Force Historical Museum exhibits an example of it.
