Fieseler Fi 156

Connecting aircraft, high-wing monoplane with counter-wind propulsion, single-engine, triplane with mixed structure.

It was powered by a 240-horsepower Argus and used hyper-stabilizing devices to achieve particularly powerful takeoff and landing performance.

It had sophisticated aerodynamics and was equipped with a wing with a very high lift coefficient.

Despite its modest speed, its special qualities immediately secured it strong military orders.

This aircraft, also called “Storch” (Daughter of the Swallow) because of the long shock absorbers on the carriage, was the protagonist of two flights that became legendary due to the operational difficulties: the rescue of Mussolini, imprisoned at Campo Imperatore in the Gran Sasso (September 1943), and the transport of General Von Greim in besieged Berlin (April 1945).

The Regia Aeronautica used at least 28 Storch aircraft. The armistice saw the confiscation by the Germans of most of the Fi.156 aircraft still in existence.
