The Republic RF-84F “Thunderflash“It was conceived to replace the F-80s adapted for photo-reconnaissance.
Deliveries to the Italian Air Force began in December 1955, specifically to the 3rd Wing at Villafranca, whose large fleet of aircraft allowed it to be upgraded to an Air Brigade.

Whilst remaining limited to the 3rd Air Brigade, the deployment of the “Thunderflash”would have continued for almost two decades, utilising photographic equipment with excellent results.
The demonstration of the system's feasibility was entrusted to the 3rd Aero Brigade, which, by intensively employing its entire fleet, managed to photograph practically the entire national territory in a single day. 

From February 1970, the availability of the F-104G led to a gradual reduction in the presence of the RF-84F in the ranks of the 3rd Air Brigade.
