Usual Wing Doctors' refresher seminar held at Pratica di Mare
On Tuesday 22nd May, the annual Aerospace Medicine workshop was held at the Flight Test Centre (C.S.V.) in Pratica di Mare, with the aim of promoting and increasing knowledge on certain particularly topical issues in aerospace medicine.
Following a welcome by the Deputy Logistics Commander, Air Division General Fabio Molteni, and a brief introduction to the workshop by the C.S.V. Commander, Air Brigade General Mauro Lunardi, and the Head of the Aerospace Medicine Department, Colonel Marco Lucertini, proceedings were opened. The event was attended by various professional figures, both military and civilian, tasked with operating in the flight environment and interacting with one another to optimise performance and enhance safety.
In the presence of the Head of the Logistics Command Health Service, Inspector General Domenico Abbenante, the various discussion sessions covered several topics, including: the general characteristics and emerging issues concerning platforms supplied to the Italian Air Force; the correction and monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors; and an overview of clinical cases and biomedical events presented by operational Wing Doctors.
At the end of the activity, a questionnaire was administered to award CME (Continuing Medical Education) credits. The Flight Test Centre brings together under a single command all the study and experimentation units of the Italian Air Force. The Centre is structured into three departments: the Flight Test Department, the Department of Aeronautical and Space Materials Technologies, and the Department of Aerospace Medicine.
In particular, the R.M.A.S. conducts studies and trials on the pathophysiological aspects of atmospheric and extra-atmospheric flight activity, through simulation using its major equipment (hypobaric chamber, spatial disorientation trainer, night vision laboratory, ejection seat trainer) or during actual flight. In light of the new operational requirements of the Armed Force, the Unit has repeatedly obtained USAF (United States Air Force) certification to conduct aerophysiological training courses for flight personnel, including at an international level.
