The 31st Wing aircraft from Ciampino flew to Germany to retrieve an Italian service member in need of immediate and urgent specialised medical care
The transport request was sent by the Joint Operations Command to the Situation Room of the Air Force General Staff, which immediately arranged for the flight to be carried out.
The aircraft, which departed from Ciampino, took on board the medical team from the “Celio” military hospital required for in-flight assistance for the patient, and took off for Ramstein airport (Germany) where the service member was hospitalised.
Arrived at the destination and landed despite the prohibitive weather conditions and heavy snowfall, the crew embarked the patient on board the aircraft which, after a few hours, departed again, but only after carrying out de-icing to remove snow and ice. Having arrived at Ciampino, the service member was immediately transferred, on board an ambulance, to the military hospital in Rome.
The aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino are used for state transport and public utility missions, such as emergency medical transport of the sick, severely traumatised patients and organs for transplants, as well as for operations to help people in hazardous situations. This latter activity, given the imminent danger to the lives of the people being transported, requires a level of readiness twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
