A man suffering from a serious heart condition was urgently transferred aboard a Falcon 50 aircraft of the Italian Air Force. The request for transport, necessary to ensure immediate specialized medical care for the patient, was sent by the Cagliari Prefecture to the Situation Room of the Air Force General Staff, which immediately ordered the flight to be carried out.
The aircraft, a Falcon 50 belonging to the 31st Squadron of Ciampino (Rome), landed at the “Mario Mameli” airport in Elmas-Cagliari at 13:53, then took off at 14:09, bound for Linate Airport, where it arrived after about 1 hour of flight.
The patient, assisted during the flight by the medical staff of the Cagliari hospital, which arrived at Milan Linate immediately was transported aboard an ambulance to the San Raffaele hospital.
Cagliari-Elmas Airport currently represents the most used airport for this type of flights throughout the southern part of Sardinia, as it is close to the main hospitals in the capital and is able to provide, with its staff, adequate assistance to aircraft and crews passing through, with quick and safe access to the flight area for ambulances from the city hospitals.
The aircraft of the 31st Stormo of Ciampino are used for state transport and for public utility missions, such as the emergency medical transport of sick people, severely traumatized individuals, and organs for transplantation, as well as for interventions in favor of people in situations of risk.
This last activity, given the imminent life-threatening danger of the people being transported, requires a level of readiness 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
