Lifesaving flight: Air Force aircraft transports child from Alghero to Genoa
A Falcon 900 from the 31st Wing has taken off from Ciampino in support of an Imminent Threat to Life (IPV).
The urgent medical transport of a five-year-old patient from the Sassari University Hospital to the Giannina Gaslini Institute in Genoa concluded late yesterday evening. The child, in imminent danger of death, was transported by a Falcon 900 aircraft belonging to the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force, based in Ciampino.
The flight, which boarded in Alghero with the child accompanied by the medical team and her parents, then departed for Genoa airport, to reach the Gaslini Institute as soon as possible.
Emergency medical transport is one of the institutional activities that the Italian Air Force carries out in service of the community. The flight, defined as “IPV - Imminent Danger to Life”, was activated at the request of the Prefecture of Sassari to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Force Command, the operational room of the Italian Air Force which, among its functions, also includes ordering and managing these types of missions. The 31st Wing, one of the Departments that carries out the operational readiness service for emergency medical transport, was therefore immediately involved.
The Italian Air Force's Flying Departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of transporting patients, organs, medical teams, and ambulances, even in complex weather conditions.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation, by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
