Last night a newborn baby, only a few hours old, admitted to Catanzaro Hospital and in need of immediate treatment, she was transported aboard a Falcon 50 of the Italian Air Force From Lamezia Terme (CT) to Naples where, with the assistance of means and personnel from the “Ugo Niutta” Airport Command, it was then admitted to the intensive neonatology department of’“Monaldi” Hospital in Naples. The military aircraft then departed for Ciampino, to resume its operational readiness service.
Air transport has been activated at the request of the Prefecture of Catanzaro to the Summit Situation Room of the Air Squad Command, the Air Force Operations Room, which among its functions also includes ordering and managing these types of missions.
Crews and transport aircraft of the Italian Air Force are ready every single day of the year, 24 hours a day, to ensure, where required and deemed necessary for reasons of urgency, the medical transport of people in imminent danger of death, of organs or medical teams or, as in this case, of people needing transfer to specialised treatment centres within the national territory. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of mission by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare and the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa.
The 31st Wing, based at Ciampino Military Airport, carries out air transport activities to meet the mobility needs of High State and Government Officials and Military Leadership, for emergency medical transport and humanitarian reasons for patients in imminent danger of life, medical teams, transplant organs, and interventions in favour of compatriots in situations of risk.
The Capodichino Airport Command (NA), in addition to providing 24/7 flight line support for military and state flights, as well as for air ambulance transport of organs and patients requiring urgent care, also ensures logistical support for various national and international entities located on the airport grounds.
