A patient suffering from serious illness was urgently transported to the Policlinico di Parma aboard a Falcon 50 aircraft of the Italian Air Force. The transport, which was requested by the Prefectural Administration of Cagliari from the Situation Room of the Air Force General Staff, which immediately made available the aircraft of the 31st Stormo of Ciampino (Rome), was necessary to ensure the patient medical care. The Falcon 50, which landed at 10:00 at the “Mario Mameli” airport in Cagliari-Elmas, took the patient, his family member and the medical staff of the “Brotzu” hospital in Cagliari on board for medical assistance during the flight. The aircraft took off at 10:43 towards the “Giuseppe Verdi” airport in Parma, where a mobile medical unit immediately transferred the patient to the specialized hospital facility. That same morning, the crew of Falcon 50 had carried out another medical transport from Catania to Bergamo, to enable a Sicilian patient to be immediately admitted to the “Niguarda” Hospital in Milan for a transplant. Cagliari-Elmas airport currently represents the most used airport for this type of flights throughout the southern part of Sardinia, as it is close to the main hospital facilities of the capital and is capable of ensuring, with its staff, adequate assistance to aircraft and crews passing through, through a rapid and safe access to the flight area for ambulances from the city hospitals.
