A man awaiting a transplant has been transported aboard a Falcon 50 of the 31st Wing from Ciampino. The transport request, necessary to ensure the patient's immediate admission to the Modena hospital for an organ transplant, was sent by the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Air Force Staff Situation Room, which ordered the flight. The aircraft, a Falcon 50 belonging to the 31st Wing of Ciampino (RM), landed at Elmas-Cagliari airport, “Mario Mameli,” at 12:06 PM and departed at 12:30 PM, bound for Bologna's “Guglielmo Marconi” airport, where it arrived after approximately 50 minutes of flight. The patient, accompanied by a family member, was assisted during the flight by a doctor. Upon arrival in Bologna, he was subsequently transported by ambulance to the Modena Polyclinic, approximately 50 kilometres away. Cagliari-Elmas airport currently represents the most frequently used hub for this type of flight for the entire southern part of Sardinia, as it is close to the capital's main hospital facilities and capable of ensuring adequate assistance to passing aircraft and crews with its own personnel, providing quick and safe access to the flight area for ambulances coming from the city's hospitals. Aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino are used for state transport and public utility missions, such as the urgent medical transport of the sick, seriously injured, and transplant organs, as well as operations for people in situations of risk. This latter activity, given the imminent danger to the lives of the people transported, requires a level of readiness, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
