The young patient, who needed to reach the “Gaslini” Paediatric Hospital in Genoa as quickly as possible, travelled on a Gulfstream G650.

The emergency medical transport of an 8-year-old child, in imminent danger of life and in need of transfer from Olbia to the hospital facility in Genoa, concluded late in the evening of June 3rd, 2026.

The flight, as provided for by the procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.

The activation was requested by the Prefecture of Sassari to the Summit Situations Room of the Air Force Command in Milan, which immediately tasked the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that carries out operational readiness service for these types of missions.

The G650 reached Olbia airport, where the child, who came from the Giovanni Paolo II Hospital, was immediately boarded along with a companion and a medical team. After landing at Genoa airport, an ambulance provided for the subsequent transfer to the “Gaslini” for admission.

This type of community support activity is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport of not only people in imminent danger of death, but also organs, medical teams or ambulances. Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for these types of interventions by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
