Technology: the Air Force participates in the National Conference on Non-Destructive Testing

In Verona, a three-day exchange of Know-How between industry operators

Author: Department of Aeronautical and Space Materials Technologies

From October 19 to 21 Veronafiere It hosted the 19th National Conference on Non-Destructive Testing, to which the Air Force participated with a representation of Non-Destructive Inspection Service (CND) of Department of Aeronautical and Space Material Technologies (RTMAS) of Aeronautical and Space Experimental Air Division (DASAS) from Pratica di Mare.

The Conference is a national event organized by’Italian Association for Non-Destructive Testing (AIPnD) has been held biennially for over 40 years and is a point of reference for operators in the civil and military CND sector. Approximately 1100 people attended the event, including faculty and students from universities, representatives of certification bodies, companies providing services/maintenance, and representatives of the companies that produce the equipment used in CND. This event represents a an important meeting point for technicians and researchers working in the field of NPL because it allows the development of new synergies that favor the sharing of information and experiences.

The term CND refers to the complex of analytical techniques (e.g., induced currents, penetrating liquids, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray radiography), based on physical principles capable of providing information on the integrity of an aeronautical component without altering its physical state, thus allowing its reuse after inspection. In the Aerospace sector, these techniques are applied to periodic and extraordinary inspections of components of aerospace vehicles in order to detect the presence of defects that could compromise their mission. In this context, personnel from Non-Destructive Inspection Service (CND) of the RTMAS plays a decisive role in the Flight Safety through the development, validation of operational procedures and the testing of innovative techniques.

In particular, the advice and support provided by the CND Service to Aircraft Maintenance Departments and to Aircraft Efficiency Groups The Air Force’s system allows for a significant increase in the performance of aircraft and flight safety.

Furthermore, the RTMAS is the only entity in the Defense sector officially recognized by the Directorate of Aeronautical Armaments and Airworthiness (DAAA) as a Training and Qualification Center for personnel operating in the CND sector. In the civilian sector this role is carried out by ITANDTB (Italian Aerospace Non-Destructive Testing Board), a Committee of UNAVIA (Agency for Standardization, Training and Qualification in the Aerospace, Defense and Security Sector) with which the RTMAS has been collaborating for years both in a continuous know-how, By participating in the Board of Directors of the Agency and in the technical committees of methodology.

The D.A.S.A.S. represents the first and only example in Italy of rationalization and centralization in a single structure of the individual study and testing centers dependent on a Military Force. An entity that, in synergy with the national and international aeronautical excellence, carries out activities of study, experimentation, testing, technical and operational evaluation, and support for research on new aeronautical weapon systems, also for the benefit of other Armed Forces and/or Armed Forces of the State, when requested.

In particular, the activities carried out by Department of Aeronautical and Space Material Technologies It covers all materials used in aeronautical and space applications, including those used in armament, and falls within the scope of materials science, analytical chemistry, applied chemistry and commodity analysis. In these fields, the Department demonstrates analytical, control, investigative and experimental capabilities and is also tasked with carrying out technical-operational assessments, experiments and investigations into the effectiveness of weapon systems and armament materials of aeronautical interest, carrying out training and qualification activities for personnel in all these areas.

The Air Experimentation Department of Aeronautics and Space It also ensures technical, logistical, administrative and operational support to the Agencies/Departments of the A..M. located on the airport grounds, as well as to the Agencies of other Armed Forces and Armed Bodies of the State present.
