L’evento è stato salutato giovedì 14 Gennaio con il volo di una formazione di 4 F-16 dalla colorazione speciale E’ stato il Colonnello Bruno Strozza, Comandante del 37° Stormo di Trapani, a portare in volo l’aereo con la livrea celebrativa dell’evento, ed a segnare il momento in cui è stato raggiunta un’altra tappa significativa del programma “Peace Cesar”. Insieme a lui, il Tenente Colonnello Salvatore Ferrara, Comandante del 10° Gruppo, il Maggiore Raffaele Catucci, Comandante del 18° Gruppo, ed il Tenente ColonnelloMauro Gnutti, Comandante del 23° Gruppo, che dipende dal 5° Stormo di Cervia, ognuno ai comandi di un caccia F-16 dalla colorazione speciale. Per l’occasione la deriva del velivolo celebrativo è stata personalizzata con il tricolore, e con le insegne dei tre gruppi equipaggiati con l’F-16, che sovrastavano la scritta “40.000 hours”. Al termine del volo il Colonnello Strozza ha ringraziato tutto il personale per l’impegno dimostrato fino ad oggi, che è il risultato del lavoro svolto da oltre cinquecento tecnici del 37° Stormo di Trapani e del 5° Stormo di Cervia, coadiuvati dal personale delle ditte americane che producono l’aereo ed il motore del velivolo.
Il programma “Peace Cesar” è iniziato il 28 giugno 2003, con l’atterraggio nella base siciliana del primo caccia F-16 di Forza Armata in Italia, e prevede la conveniente formula “pay by the hour”, cioè il pagamento soltanto delle ore di volo, con un coinvolgimento nella manutenzione congiunto di personale italiano ed americano. Inizialmente destinato a concludersi il 31 dicembre 2010, con un totale di 45.000 ore di volo, il programma è stato esteso fino al primo semestre del 2012, portando le ore di volo a 47.000.
