On Tuesday 31 August, Col. Masi received from Prof. Moscardini the small sword that belonged to the pilot officer. The simple yet significant ceremony was held in Pofi (Frosinone) at the Romanesque Church of San Antonino Martire where, at the end of the religious service in memory of the Captain, Prof. Moscardini wished to donate to Frosinone Airport the last remaining memento in her possession, the small sword that in 1924 the then student pilot of the ‘Aquila‘ course of the Aeronautica Academy held as an integral part of his uniform. The small sword, along with all the memorabilia that over the years the Moscardini family has kindly donated to the Stormo, will be kept in the office of the Commander of the 72° Stormo. Girolamo Moscardini, born in Rome on 14 April 1905 to parents from Pofi, at the age of 19, in 1924, was admitted to attend the ’Aquila' course of the Aeronautica Academy. Appointed aeroplane observer in 1925, the following year he received the rank of Sottotenente and was transferred to the Stormo Scuole Militari d’Aviazione. Promoted to Tenente in August 1927, in the same year he arrived at the Pilot School of the Regia Accademia di Capua. On 9 February 1928 he was appointed aeroplane pilot on the SVA aircraft and subsequently military pilot on the A 300-4. After a period at the 20° Stormo Aeroplani di Ricognizione, in 1931 he was assigned to the NADAM School of Orbetello and on 3 March of the same year he was promoted to the rank of Capitano. Having distinguished himself here for his brilliant qualities as an Officer and Pilot, he carried out intense activity as a flight instructor. Chosen to participate in the Giro Aereo d'Europa as one of the best pilots existing nationally and in Europe, while preparing for the demanding competition, he crashed with his Breda 33 aircraft during a training flight in the skies of the Lombardy region, precisely in the territory of Castellanza in the Varese area; it was 3 August 1932.
