Air Navigation Services: System Wide Information Management (SWIM) workshop

Thursday 14 September, the Air Force hosted in Rome a Workshop on the topic of System Wide Information Management (SWIM)), an event organised by European Defence Agency (EDA) and in which experts from the Armed Forces, from the same Exploratory Data Analysis, of EUROCONTROL, of SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM), of’National Civil Aviation Agency (ENAC) and of ENAV the civil services provider for Air Navigation.

It Workshop It represented a valuable opportunity to deepen the subject matter SWIM and to pursue continuous improvement in civil/military interoperability for the provision of air navigation services to general air traffic.

The SWIM concept is part of the European technology programme. Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) and of the initiative Single European Sky (SES) launched in 2004 by the European Commission to harmonise air traffic management within the European Union, to strengthen the Safety and the efficiency of air traffic, reduce delays and optimise airspace capacity in Europe. Specifically, once implemented in the context of Common Project 1, SWIM will allow more effective sharing of aeronautical and meteorological information between all stakeholders interested, through their digitisation and dissemination according to standardised and interoperable protocols.

The meeting of industry experts on Air Navigation Services The national and European institutions also intended to strengthen the synergies already in place for the optimisation of the European network in support of general air traffic.

The initiative, in line with the established civil-military cooperation confirmed at the recent meeting of the AM and ENAV leadership, was useful for initiating discussions on possible further collaborations aimed at improving the provision of CNS for the benefit of the entire national community in the interests of the country's system.

AIR navigation services: workshop on System Wide Information Management (SWIM)

On Thursday, 14 September, the Italian Air Force hosted a workshop to address System Wide Information Management (SWIM). The event, which took place in Rome, was organised by the European Defence Agency (EDA) and brought together experts from the Italian Air Force, EDA, EUROCONTROL, SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM), the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and the Italian civil Air Navigation Service provider (ENAV).

During the workshop, participants addressed SWIM in depth and sought a continuous enhancement of interoperability between civil and military for the provision of air navigation services to general air traffic.

The SWIM implementation is directly linked to the European technological Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme and to the European Commission’s Single European Sky (SES) initiative, launched in 2004 to harmonize airspace management in the European Union, increasing air traffic safety and efficiency while also reducing delays and optimising airspace capacity.
Once implemented, under the scope of Common Project 1, SWIM will, amongst other benefits, allow a more efficient exchange of aeronautical and meteorological information among all affected stakeholders. The data exchange will be enabled by digitalisation and standardised and interoperable standards.
This workshop, involving air navigation service experts from national and European institutions, also served to further strengthen existing synergies aimed at optimising the European network, in support of general air traffic.

The initiative aligns with consolidated civil/military cooperation in Italy, as confirmed by the recent executive meeting between ENAV and the Italian Air Force. Further collaboration was also explored during the workshop, with the aim of further enhancing air navigation services provision at a national level.
