The Salento airbase has donated medical equipment to the 118 Operations Centre in Lecce. The donation was made possible by a series of initiatives organised during 2009 within the airport, aimed at raising funds for charity. The sums collected were then made available for the purchase of equipment identified in agreement with the General Directorate of the ASL of Lecce.
The initiative followed other events organised in the two preceding years, culminating in the donation of two pulse oximeters to the Paediatric Department of the “Vito Fazzi” hospital in Lecce, and an electrocardiograph and a stretcher to the Paediatric Oncology Department of the same hospital.
During the event, Colonel Bartomeoli presented a “scholarship” to the student Lorenzo Palma from Botrugno (Lecce). These scholarships are awarded annually by the National Organisation for the Children of Aviators (ONFA) to orphaned students who have excelled academically. “It is at least opportune to highlight,” stated the Wing Commander, "the high calibre of all those charitable initiatives organised throughout the year, which have enabled the generosity and altruism of the military and civilian personnel of Lecce airport to be pooled together, allowing for a small contribution to be made to public utility sectors during a period that is, in any case, one of significant resource limitation for everyone.".
