On 27 June, a seminar on “Gender Differences” was held at the 46th Air Brigade in Pisa, led by Dr Valeria Bossio, a psychologist and psychotherapist, in collaboration with the Brigade's Gender Advisor.

Author: Major Rosa Linda Lucchesi

The’event – in which military personnel participated, of all genders, of 46th Brigade – allowed to To delve deeper, even with the comfort of the latest data ISTAT, diverse Themes and notions on the subject, including the differences in the definitions of sex and gender and the Social roles and how these are learned through the action of social agents, meaning the family, the school, the religion, the popular culture and media.

It was also discussed Stereotypes and of prejudices, of their Genesis and the connections that can be created between them. The stereotypical image has effects on the formation of people's identities and abilities, to the point of influencing and blocking the development of individual potential, even conditioning their personality.

One important focus it has been done particularly on the themes of education and the employment and pay levels of men and women in the various European Union countries, analysing the various cultural factors, legal, social and economic factors which influence and characterise the trend of such data. The issue of the gaps between generations e generations, which also significantly affects our country and results in fewer opportunities for individuals and society itself.

Through the Diversity management – literally diversity management – it is possible to transform differences into resources in the labour market, with a view to participation and cooperation and with the aim of reducing gaps and discrimination which result in fewer individual opportunities for those who suffer them. Authoritative studies have long shown how overcoming them would translate into an overall increase in efficiency, productivity, and the much-coveted growth. The Diversity management is proposed precisely as enhancement tool of female potential and the differences (cultural, age-related, ethnic, etc.) in the business environment, overcoming stereotypes of the “masculine” and “feminine”, which risk triggering new forms of conflict.

There is a need, however, to alliances, to transform differences into a resource, into an element of value creation and competitive advantage. The key is recognise, respect e Welcome the differences and offer each person the opportunity to develop and apply their skills and competencies in the workplace, reflecting the gender, ethnicity, nationality, age, socio-cultural background, and experience that distinguish them.

I partecipanti al seminario sono stati sottoposti a dei tests. Small group tasks In order to jointly understand and analyse the various points of view and try not to have prejudices and stereotypes, but through respect and dialogue to understand gender and differences.

This Seminar comes within the route initiated by the’Italian Air Force and more generally from the Defence Staff for the introduction of the gender perspective in every sector, so that full application is found in the Armed Forces UN Resolution “Women, Peace and Security” of 2000 and that they may bearers of values of gender equality to be conveyed to the wider world as well.
