The meeting, organized by the Air Force General Staff, will take place on Tuesday 18 September in Rome at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies.
Space Weather deals with the prediction and monitoring of the space environment due to the influence of solar activity on the magnetosphere and thermosphere, including the flow of heavy protons towards Earth, and aims to safeguard not only the safety of systems and crews in flight but also that of technologies on the ground.
Space meteorology is a discipline that studies the disturbances in the interplanetary space that occur on the Sun, in the solar wind, in the terrestrial magnetosphere and ionosphere, and that then propagate to Earth, producing effects that affect human life and condition its activities, putting the resistance of the technological systems used in everyday life to a severe test. Until a few years ago, such processes were of purely scientific interest. In reality, in recent years, with the technological development of man, they have assumed an ever-increasing social and economic importance, as they can disrupt the proper functioning of technological systems in space and on Earth, such as the communication systems and the high-scale electricity distribution networks, as well as having effects on human health during space flights and those with aircraft at high altitude. Internationally, there are two main centers of excellence in the United States and Australia that disseminate information about these events via the web.
During the meeting, which will be attended by, among others, Air Force General Roberto Corsini, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Force General Carlo Magrassi, Deputy Commander of the Air Force Command, and Professor Mauro Messerotti, Lecturer in Meteorology and Space Climatology, the actual need for a national monitoring/surveillance instrument for these phenomena will be analyzed, as well as the related opportunities for development, innovation and the resulting technological repercussions.
