The young patient, who needed to reach the “Gaslini” hospital in Genoa as quickly as possible, travelled with her mother and a medical team on a Gulfstream G650 from the 31st Wing.

The urgent medical transport of a baby girl, who was in imminent danger of death and needed to be transferred from Alghero to the “Gaslini” hospital, concluded on the night of 20 February 2026 with her landing in Genoa. The flight, as provided for by procedures for this type of activity, was authorised by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which manages and coordinates the activities of the state aircraft fleet. The activation occurred at the request of the Prefecture of Sassari to the Summit Situations Room of the Air Force's 1st Air Mission Command in Milan, which immediately involved the 31st Wing of Ciampino, one of the Units that provides operational readiness for these types of missions.

All necessary procedures were carried out by the military crew and, after embarking the newborn from the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari, along with her mother and a medical team, the G650 took off from Alghero airport late on the evening of 19 February 2026. After landing at Genoa airport, which occurred shortly after midnight, an ambulance took care of transporting the newborn to the Ligurian hospital facility for admission.

This type of community support activity is one of the institutional tasks carried out by the Italian Air Force. Flight units are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport of not only people in imminent danger of death, but also organs, medical teams or ambulances. Every year, hundreds of flight hours are carried out for these types of interventions by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
