A woman has been urgently transferred from the island of Lampedusa to Palermo, while a man has been transferred from Ciampino to Bari to undergo a transplant.
Between yesterday evening, Friday 28th November, and this morning, Saturday 29th November, the Italian Air Force's standby crews successfully completed two urgent medical transports for a man and a woman who required immediate medical attention.
Both flights, as is the case for this type of activity, were authorised by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, which manages and coordinates the activities of the state aircraft fleet.
In particular, yesterday evening, a Gulfstream G650 belonging to the 31st Wing of Ciampino carried out an urgent medical transport from the island of Lampedusa to Palermo airport for a 64-year-old woman who required immediate medical attention. The transfer request was received by the Agrigento Prefecture from the Summit Situations Room of the Air Squad Command – 1st Air Region in Milan, which manages these types of operations.
However, this morning, a C-130J transport aircraft from the 46th Air Brigade in Pisa carried out the urgent transport of an ambulance with a 50-year-old man on board, from Rome-Ciampino airport to Bari Palese. Due to his particular health condition, the patient travelled with special medical equipment inside the ambulance and was monitored by a medical team throughout the flight. The request for this special air transport came from the Prefecture of Rome to the Operations Room of the Air Force's Aerospace Operations Command, which is responsible for coordinating these types of transports.
The Italian Air Force's flight departments are available to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport not only of individuals in imminent danger of life, but also of organs, medical teams, or ambulances.
Hundreds of flight hours are carried out each year for this type of operation by aircraft from the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, and by helicopters from the 15th Wing of Cervia.
