The emergency medical transport from Cagliari to Milan Linate for a baby girl of just under a month old concluded in the early afternoon of today, Sunday 30 November.
The transport of the young patient was carried out using a G650 transport aircraft of the 31st Wing of the Italian Air Force stationed in Ciampino (RM).
The flight, as is the case for this type of activity, was authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, which manages and coordinates the activities of the State aircraft fleet.
Specifically, the request for the special life-saving flight was made by the Prefecture of Cagliari to the Top Situation Room of the Air Squad Command – 1st Air Region of Milan, the Italian Air Force body tasked with coordinating the crews on standby alert for flight activities for patients in imminent danger of death.
The 31st Wing Gulfstream G650 took off in the early afternoon today from Cagliari-Elmas airport and arrived after about an hour's flight at Milan-Linate airport, home to the Airport Command – HQ of the CSA/1st Air Region.
Once on the ground, the young patient was entrusted to the care of the medical staff at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, where she was subsequently admitted.
The flight departments of the Italian Air Force are at the disposal of the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with assets and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of life, but also of organs, medical teams or ambulances. Hundreds of flight hours are carried out every year for this type of intervention by the aircraft of the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and by the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia.
