Research and Technology: Innovation Day 2023 concludes

This year, the appointment with research and the innovation of new technologies in the field of Armed Forces work processes is renewed.

Tuesday 19 September, at the Automated Information Systems Department (Re.S.I.A.) of the Italian Air Force, the latest edition of the’Innovation Day, a day dedicated to the introduction of new technologies within the Armed Forces' operational and organisational processes.

In collaboration with key business partners and in the presence of Commander of Air Force Logistics, Air Chief Marshal Roberto Comelli, were presented by military personnel belonging to 3rd Division of the Logistics Command some study, research, and development projects for new capacitive assets capable of optimising processes and reducing activity times.

The main theme was the streamlining of processes Deployment of CIS arrangementsCommunication Information Services) in Operational Theatres, which can benefit, both domestically and internationally, from cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality, new service delivery solutions for auxiliary equipment, connectivity 5G and satellite.

Thanks to research and development in synergy with Italian Air Force partners, the use of Artificial Intelligence algorithms and systems accelerates decision-making processes and assists operators' activities, as highlighted by the Logistic Commander, “The Italian Air Force's commitment to the development of technologies related to’artificial intelligence This is now well-established. Thanks to the advancements made by both the Armed Force and our partners, we can now rely on increasingly “intelligent” and fast tools, which streamline decision-making processes and exponentially enhance the capabilities of our systems.

The speakers presented some “Live demo” interactive to demonstrate the potential of cutting-edge tools such as virtual reality headsets and 3D model catalogues, the so-called Digital Twins of operational field assets, which allow for faster preparation and deployment of logistical resources. This system, defined Redeployment Digital Survey, is integrated with a broader project defined Smart Wing which allows all application systems and services in production to be centralised and interact.

In his closing speech, the Brigadier General Vincenzo Falzarano emphasised “The importance of making logistical/operational processes more efficient, particularly for deployment outside national borders, optimising the use of both material and personnel resources. Platforms such as the “Smart Wing OPS” guarantee a very high level of" integration with products from various operational areas. All of this is enhanced by systems that process operational data using artificial intelligence tools and secured by hardware countermeasures, 5G/Satellite networks, and VPNs. All of this can only happen through adequate governance of the ongoing digital transformation and the Armed Force's information assets, while simultaneously guaranteeing the required operational standards and an adequate cyber security posture.”.

The 3rd Division is the sector of the Logistics Command with the important task of the Technical and Logistical management of all Air Defence, Flight Assistance, Meteorology systems and, not least, of the Armed Force's communications sector. In recent years, the management of the sector has been taking on an increasingly operational connotation. Cyber Defence to the Aerospace domain.
