Tuesday 24th March 2026, at the 15th Wing base in Cervia (RA), the ceremony for the centenary of the’83rd SAR Group (Search and Rescue), a milestone that encapsulates a century of operational evolution, dedication, and a spirit of service.

Over the course of a century, the 83rd Group has been a fundamental benchmark in the Italian Air Force's search and rescue capabilities, constantly adapting to evolving operational scenarios: from the first aerial reconnaissance missions to oceanic transits, from the deployment of water rescue squadrons to modern Combat SAR operations. A journey characterised by continuous technological and training innovation, always guided by the founding values of service to the community.

The numbers concretely demonstrate the impact of this operational legacy: over 800 rescue missions completed and thousands of lives saved, often in extremely complex weather and environmental conditions, confirming the high level of readiness and professionalism of the crews.

The ceremony was attended with great feeling, with the presence of civil and military authorities and numerous current and former members of the Group, united by a strong sense of belonging and a shared operational experience.

During the interventions, the Major Simone Agostinelli, Commander of the 83rd SAR Group, the Colonel Antonio Viola, Commander of the 15th Wing, and the Air Vice-Marshal Alessandro De Lorenzo, Commander of the Mobility and Support Forces Command, highlighted the excellence of the personnel and the value of a tradition built over time. Particular emphasis was placed on remembering those who lost their lives in the line of duty, an example of dedication and spirit of sacrifice.

Among the most significant moments of the day, the unveiling of the official Centenary logo and the “special colour” livery dedicated to the anniversary, symbols of the Group's identity and history.

To conclude the ceremony, two HH-139 helicopters flew over Cervia airbase in formation, performing the traditional “flag pass” to the strains of the National Anthem.

With this important milestone, the 83rd SAR Group inaugurates its second century of activity, confirming itself as one of the most operational and representative entities of the Air Force, always ready to intervene with promptness and expertise, faithful to its motto: “so that others may live”.
