At Douhet, students from the schools in Florence participated in the meeting on the topic of “Road Safety”. In the meeting, organized in collaboration with the Traffic Police Department for Tuscany as part of the European project called “Young Europe”, about 100 students from other high schools in the city of Florence took part, in addition to the 120 students from the Classical and Scientific High Schools of the Douhet School. In addressing a welcoming message to the participants, General Camperi emphasized the importance and uniqueness of the preventive initiative, promoted by the State Police in concert with the schools, aimed at raising awareness among young people about respect for the rules and the consequences of non-compliance with the road code: “a unique initiative that is in line with the main education and prevention activities carried out in the field of “safety” by the Highway Police on the territory and by the Air Force for flight activities”. Colonel Claudio Icardi, introducing the topic of the meeting and thanking the State Police for their commitment and availability in promoting the initiative, confirmed that the Douhet School is sensitive to the problems of young people towards whom it carries out, through similar educational and cultural initiatives, constant awareness-raising and prevention activities aimed at reducing the problems and social phenomena that directly affect them. In their remarks, the representatives of the State Police – Chief Commissioner Teresa Nobile of the Traffic Police Department for Tuscany and Deputy Commissioner Andrea Borghi of the Florence North Traffic Police – first introduced the topic by projecting a video and some very significant images of the phenomenon of road accidents in the national territory. Subsequently, before his presentation, they presented the film “Young Europe”, promoted with the aim of touching the consciences of young people about a social problem that they are not yet well aware of or are even poorly informed about. Subsequently, the representatives of the State Police developed an interesting discussion with the students and, thanks to the subsequent assistance of equally strong and engaging images, they deepened the issue from a technical-scientific and legal perspective, analyzing, in particular, the main causes and the most frequent behaviors that cause the often fatal road accidents in which young people are increasingly involved. At the end of the meeting, it was evident that the students were becoming aware of the phenomenon, and in this regard, summarizing the results of the meeting, Colonel Icardi highlighted the need and importance of the function that public institutions, such as schools and law enforcement agencies, are called upon to exercise in order to contribute, also through preventive activities, to the education of young people and the formation of their conscience towards respect for the rules and the value of life. The initiative is part of the 2013/2014 Training Offer Plan of the School and is part of a series of exchange activities between the schools in the area, with the aim of allowing students to discuss the problems of the youth and school world.
