The Italian Air Force took part in the second annual NATO exercise dedicated to improvements on computer network systems among participating NATO nations.
From 9 to 20 October, the Italian Air Force took part in the’NATO exercise defined as“Tactical Data Link Interoperability Test”and aimed at increasing synergy between the various air, maritime and land components of the Atlantic Alliance countries. The exercise scenario served as a backdrop for a series of tests aimed at both verifying new procedures, as well as to the improvement of the configurations of IT systems deputies for the management of operational missions.
The “workspace” created to experiment with and share the data resulting from the tests and verifications carried out by all the teams from participating NATO countries – in technical jargon Battle Lab, as well as the heart of the exercise – has enabled data exchange via a computer network safe and controlled designated Combined Federated Battle Lab Network (CFBLNet), to which all are connected Battle Lab.
The contribution of the Italian Air Force to the exercise was realised through careful and synergistic work that involved both the personnel of the Command and Control Systems Management and Innovation Department (technical component), both that of 22nd Radar Squadron of Licola operational component.
In this 2nd annual edition, the national objectives focused both on improving the capacity of systems regarding the’identification and at tracking friendly forces in the area of operations, and on the analysis of specific procedures contributing to the management of air units by a C2 (Command and Control) asset in the execution of certain operational activities.
The results emerging from all tests performed constitute the basis for the continuous modernisation of configurations and procedures, with particular reference to NATO STANAGs (Standard Agreement) and for a development of systems (hardware and software) that increasingly responds to the needs of the operational component.
It Re.G.I.S.C.C., established in 2009 on the Pratica di Mare airfield and subordinate to the 3rd Division of the Logistics Command, ensures the management of support systems for Command and Control (C2) and C4-ISR functions (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) of the Armed Force, while also guaranteeing configuration control and promoting innovation through development and experimentation activities.
