Weather: The Italian Air Force at the Meteorology Festival 2022

The international dimension of meteorology was the theme chosen for the 8th edition of the event dedicated to meteorological science and climate change.

Author: Lt Col Angela Celozzi

The 8th edition of the was held in Rovereto from 9 to 12 November. Meteorology Festival, the event dedicated to Meteorology and to the study of climate change which every year brings together sector experts from all over Italy: from institutional meteorological services, to professionals and businesses, from the world of research, universities, and schools, to the world of associations, promoted by the Italian Association of Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (AISAM), from the’University of Trento, to the Municipality of Rovereto and from the Civic Museum Foundation of Rovereto.

The international dimension of meteorology is the theme identified for this edition, a Topic which allowed to highlight the’interdisciplinary setting e global necessary for meteorology to be able to operate effectively in understanding the complexity of the phenomena and processes related to the monitoring and prediction of planet Earth.

The international context is, in fact, the natural setting for those working in the field of meteorology: looking beyond one’s own horizons is essential both because of the nature of meteorological phenomena and in view of the climate change that affect all latitudes across the board.

As further evidence of the great relevance of the chosen topic, the same issues were also discussed in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, where proceedings began a few days ago at the COP27 World Climate Summit with the presentation of report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

As stated by Professor Zardi in his welcoming address, the planet's atmosphere knows no national borders, and it is therefore impossible to discuss and operate meteorology, in the fullest sense of the term, outside of any International connection. Weather data exchange is essential for producing the Operational forecasts, necessary for the construction and management of large infrastructure, and the numerical forecasts from mathematical models, which process simulations of weather and climate evolution, and require supranational commitments such as the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSATand the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather ForecastsEuropean Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts).

The’Italian Air Force, as in previous editions, he/she/it participated in the Festival as an institutional body within international organisations. The speech by the Brigadier General Luca Baione, Head of’General Office for Military Aviation and Meteorology (AVIAMM) e Permanent Representative of Italy to the’World Meteorological Organization (WMO), opened the session dedicated to Meteorology in its Institutional dimension; esteemed speakers also intervened, such as Dr. Florence Rabier, Director-General of ECMWF, Colonel Adriano Raspanti, Head of the AVIAMM Meteorology Office, and Dr. Paolo M. Ruti, Scientific Head of EUMETSAT projects, and the Director-General of the Agenzia Italia Meteo, Dr. Carlo Cacciamani.

“We constantly operate within various international forums representing the country, ensuring that the development programmes of different international organisations adhere to the operational needs of the national meteorological and climatological community..” Col. Raspanti explained in his address entitled “Italy in international meteorological organisations: consolidating the future”. “The programmes defined together today will become the activities and projects of the future, today's planning will facilitate tomorrow's actions – concluded Col. Raspanti – Collaborations take on another meaning when understood as a commitment to consolidate the future of the next generations: this is the responsibility of each of us and of the Air Force.”
