“Italy possesses top-tier human, scientific, and operational capital for atmospheric monitoring for climate change studies. Among others, I recall the Italian Air Force Meteorological Service observatory at Monte Cimone (Modena), which is part of the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), a network of just 31 observatories worldwide. Among these, the Italian one holds the oldest continuous CO2 monitoring historical series in Europe (started in 1979) and, since the 1990s, has also seen the presence of the Institute of Atmosphere and Climate Science of the CNR, operating synergistically with a ’country system“ approach. The importance The reputation of the Monte Cimone station on a global scale has prompted the Italian Air Force to enhance its functions and prestige, promoting a project for the creation of a University Campus for Climate and Atmosphere for international-level courses. Indeed, training in the meteorological and climate sectors represents another excellence of the “Sistema Italia” (Italian System), recently presented to the international community at COP28, where the Italian Air Force, along with a representation of three universities and three centres of competence, illustrated just some of the university, specialisation and training courses available. the disposition of the international community, especially for developing countries. Training proposals also include those related to the use of satellite data, including those from the H-SAF consortium, formed by 11 EUMETSAT countries and led by Italy, responsible for the processing of water-related products (water management and operational hydrology)“, were the words of Gen. B. Luca BAIONE who spoke during the FIFTH SESSION entitled Sustainability and ecological transition for a more competitive Europe.
The presence of General Baione at the session highlighted the constant commitment of the Air Force in monitoring atmospheric and environmental parameters. Indeed, the activities of the Meteorological Service range from classic ground observations to 12 daily radiosoundings, from the acquisition of satellite data to the management of special lightning networks, culminating in the detection of solar radiation, ultraviolet rays, ozone and atmospheric turbidity, all in synergy with various national bodies and representing the country in all relevant International Organisations.
