The Aeronautical Health Service was the focus of the conference “The new frontiers of aeronautical medicine: from biocontainment to aerospace medicine”, organised by the CESMA – Centre for Aeronautical Military Studies held on 14 September 2023 at the Casa dell’Aviatore in Rome.

It General Inspector Pietro Perelli, Head of the Health Service and the Aeronautical Health Corps, opened the conference with a speech that traced the stages and progress of Aeronautical medicine through its protagonists, from high-altitude medicine to recent sub-orbital experiments, followed by a brief greeting from the’Inspector General of Military Health, Major General Vito Ferrara.

The first session, drawing on recent experiences gained during the pandemic, highlighted the fundamental role of the AM, with its capacity to biocontainment transport in crisis management, to then illustrate how Institutions were able to test health containment procedures for international air traffic and present an innovative personal protective device.

The event then focused on the round table titled “The multidimensional reality of Aviation Medicine”where the speakers, doctors of the Aeronautical Health Corps, illustrated how Aeronautical Health represents a key element for study, development and research in the aeronautical and space fields.

The complex evolution of man-machine interface, Driven by technological progress and the demand for ever-higher performance, it presents challenges that aeronautical medicine is constantly called upon to address, also in light of the constant progress made in studies on the effects of extreme environments, containment capabilities, which are continuously updated and implemented, and the most recent experiments in microgravity.

The conference concluded with the speech of Chief of Logistics, Air Force General Roberto Comelli, who emphasised the ever-increasing integration between the military and civilian worlds, focusing on how technological innovation has expanded the aerial domain, linking it to space, with inevitable repercussions also in the field of aeronautical and space medicine.
