The support provided by the air traffic controllers of Sigonella Military Airport to the civil air traffic of Fontanarossa continued during the latest eruption of Etna. From the morning of the 24th to the early afternoon of 25 December 2018, the normal flight activity of Catania Fontanarossa civil airport was seriously compromised due to the emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere following the spectacular eruption of Etna, resulting in periods of total closure, general restrictions on movements and/or the closure of only certain sectors of eastern Sicily's airspace.
