A delegation of approximately 150 evaluators from various NATO countries verified the Wing's reaction capability by simulating a series of operational events. The evaluation, successfully passed by the Department, concluded with a demonstration of efficiency in various sectors of employment. The attitude shown by all personnel and adequate performance highlighted by the command and control chain in coordinating and managing the operational scenarios proposed by the Evaluation Team, enabled the achievement of the result.
The 50th Wing of Piacenza is a unit specialised in electronic warfare and specifically in SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence) operations. These operations, conducted with the Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat Reconnaissance) aircraft, aim to suppress enemy air defences through the use of the HARM (anti-radiation air-to-surface missile) missile, capable of striking electromagnetic emission sources, previously identified and studied by the highly specialised personnel of the Wing. The 50th Wing has participated in all operations involving NATO in recent years. In particular, the Tornado ECR aircraft, belonging to the 155th Group, were among the first to operate during “Odissey Dawn” and “Unified Protector” over Libya.
