Two Eurofighter fighter jets from the 36th Wing of Gioia del Colle intercepted the aircraft near Trapani. Two Eurofighter fighter jets from the 36th Wing of Gioia del Colle (Bari) intercepted an aircraft near Trapani that had lost radio communications with air traffic control. At approximately 4.20 PM today, the two Italian Air Force fighter jets, on national territory air defence duty, received orders to identify the aircraft transiting within Italian airspace with which communications from the ground had been lost. The interception took place in the vicinity of Trapani. Within minutes of receiving the order while airborne, the two interceptor fighter jets established visual contact with the aircraft, ascertaining that it was not in an emergency or dangerous situation. Once the aircraft had been identified, the two fighter jets escorted it out of national airspace.
