Staff from the Salento Detachment and United Nations Agencies celebrated the “Winter Solstice” together. The event was strongly supported by the Director of the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC), Mr. Perkins Kiplin, the UNHRD Deputy Network Coordinator and Brindisi Manager, Mr. Stefano Peveri, and the Commander of the Salento Detachment, Colonel Andrea Aiello, to further consolidate the relationships and objectives that have united the United Nations and the Air Force for years within the scope of their primary work activities supporting the “peacekeeping” operations of the Global Service Centre (UNGSC) and the “humanitarian” operations of the United Nations Humanitarian Response Base (UNHRD). The initiative, enhanced by a musical performance, was also marked by a fundraising drive for the “UMANO” charity initiative, through which staff wished to show their solidarity with those in difficult circumstances and in need of help. The funds, in particular, will be allocated to non-EU citizens housed at Caritas facilities in Brindisi for the purchase of materials needed to furnish the facilities currently undergoing renovation. The event, which saw the participation of approximately 300 people, began with greetings from Mr. Perkins, followed by those from Colonel Aiello and Mr. Peveri, who highlighted the particular “significance” of the event and thanked attendees for their participation. Colonel Aiello, in particular, concluded his speech by quoting a phrase from the American industrialist Henry Ford: “Getting together is a beginning, staying together is progress, but working together is a success.”The Brindisi Detachment provides support for the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) “peacekeeping” operations and the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) “humanitarian” operations. Furthermore, it ensures air navigation services for civil aviation and assistance to transit aircraft belonging to NATO countries, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
