On Thursday 30th September, the Municipal Administration of Gjacovë named the road leading to the main entrance of the military airport. With this act, the institution wished to pay homage to Italy and its Armed Forces, who for over 10 years have been engaged in Kosovo in the work of stabilising and rebuilding the territory and its socio-economic fabric, demonstrating high professionalism, dedication, and spirit of sacrifice. The naming ceremony of ‘Viale AMIKo’ was attended by the Mayor of the City of Gjacovë, Dr. Pal Lekaj, the President of the Municipal Council of Gjacovë, Ms. Teuta Xaxhiu, the Commander of the AMIKo Air Task Force and Airport (Italian Air Force in Kosovo), Col. Riccardo Ferraresi, and a representation of the personnel from the Air Task Force and the Multinational Battle Group – West in Belo Polje. AMIKo, currently the name of the military airport in Gjacovë, was chosen by the aeronautical authorities for its similarity to the Italian word ‘amico’, signifying the sentiment of friendship that binds the Kosovar people to the Italian people and, in particular, to the Air Force personnel who have alternated at the airport site since 1999 to ensure its full functionality.
