The mission, carried out by a crew from the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa with a C-130J aircraft, which brought a twenty-six-year-old man in imminent danger of death from Lamezia Terme to Bologna, concluded last night around two o'clock.
The flight, requested by the Prefecture of Catanzaro and authorised by the Prime Minister's Office, was arranged and coordinated rapidly by the Summit Situations Room of the Air Squad Command – 1st Air Region of Milan. This latter, an operational room of the Italian Air Force, has among its duties that of activating and managing urgent medical transports, giving the take-off order to the aircraft that the Armed Force keeps ready, 24 hours a day, 24 hours a day, in various bases, for this type of necessity.
The C-130J from the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa therefore made it possible to board an ambulance, with the patient and medical team on board, and to quickly transport it from the “Renato Dulbecco” Hospital of Catanzaro to the “Sant'Orsola” Polyclinic in Bologna.
The aircraft took off from Pisa Airport and headed towards Lamezia Terme Airport, where it embarked the vehicle used for emergency medical transport. After landing at Bologna Airport, the ambulance continued its journey to the destination hospital, so that the patient could receive the necessary specialist treatment. The C-130J returned to Pisa, immediately becoming available for possible further activations.
The 46th Air Brigade of Pisa is one of the Italian Air Force Units that carries out operational readiness service for this type of mission, along with the 31st Wing of Ciampino, the 14th Wing of Pratica di Mare, and the helicopters of the 15th Wing of Cervia. The flying units are indeed available to the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with aircraft and crews capable of operating, even in complex weather conditions, to ensure the urgent transport not only of people in imminent danger of death, but also of organs, medical teams, or ambulances.
