Author: Experimental Flight Centre - Pratica Di Mare - Major Alessandra Bandiera

Presentation of case studies of failures on aeronautical components during operation due to fatigue/fracture phenomena. The event is part of a Memorandum of Understanding, signed by the Flight Experimental Centre (CSV) and the University of Cassino, concerning study and experimentation activities in the field of materials used in aeronautical and aerospace applications, as well as components and structures used in both currently operating aircraft and those due to be deployed shortly. The seminar, aimed at third-year students in Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Industrial Engineering degree courses, is an integral part of the Principles and Methodologies of Machine Construction module. During the symposium, the following topics were analysed: analysis methods; legal aspects; regulatory aspects; numerical simulation. The Chemical Department (RC) of the CSV participated in the scientific day with presentations by three Officers of the Aeronautical Engineering Corps: Lieutenant Colonel Manuele Bernabei, head of the CSV Chemical Department, who presented a case study concerning an ultralight aircraft; Major Laura Allegrucci, who presented a case study concerning C27-J aircraft; and finally, Major Mikael Amura, who illustrated case studies on SF-260 engines and the relationship between aeronautical maintenance and flight safety in relation to HH3F helicopters. Failure analysis This is a specific investigation that, through the performance of various tests and observations, allows for the determination of the causes of component behavioural anomalies. The clients of the CSV's RC are primarily bodies belonging to the Public Administration, such as the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies. Requests also come from government agencies such as the Civil Protection Department and the National Agency for Flight Safety. The RC carries out inspection/investigation, testing, and control activities on a wide variety of aeronautical materials. The investigation activity carried out by the RC is often conducted within its own facilities but jointly with the aeronautical companies involved (e.g. Alenia Aermacchi, Piaggio, Lockheed Martin, Rolls Royce, Airbus). In addition to the bodies already mentioned, the ordinary judiciary, through its Public Prosecutors' Offices, also often requests the support of personnel from the Chemical Department as a Court-Appointed Technical Consultant (CTU) in the event of incidents connected with flight activities for which the investigating authority deems a technical investigation necessary.
