The little patient arrived on Thursday, December 31st at the military airport in Pratica di Mare and was subsequently transferred to Potenza. Everything began in June 2009 when the military of the Regional Command West in Herat (Afghanistan), under the command of Brigadier General Alessandro Veltri, identified the case of the little patient whose condition – which immediately appeared serious to the doctors at the Italian field hospital – required the prompt initiation of all the procedures that, thanks also to the involvement of the Non-Profit Organization “Pubblica Assistenza del Raparo”, allow Afghan civilians suffering from serious pathologies to be treated in Italy. The little Said, who traveled with his father aboard a C-130J aircraft of the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa and, subsequently, a B-767 of the 14th Squadron of Pratica di Mare (Rome), landed in the afternoon of Thursday, December 31st at the military airport of Pratica di Mare and was subsequently transferred to the Lucanian capital with an ambulance of the Italian Red Cross. The costs of hospitalization and surgery were covered by the Basilicata Region, while the expenses related to food, accommodation, and the care of the child and the parent are borne by the diocesan Caritas of Potenza.
