The Logistics Commander’s visit forms part of a series of activities aimed at gaining first-hand knowledge of the technical and operational realities of the organisations and units under the Logistics Command. On his arrival, the Logistics Commander was welcomed by Colonel Gerardo Contristano, Garrison Commander and Commander of the Air Force Foreign Languages School in Loreto, and by Major Nunzio Pisano, Commander of the 114th Remote Radar Squadron. General Salvestroni met with the Squadron’s personnel and attended an introductory briefing, presented by the Squadron Commander, during which the unit’s specific activities, the main challenges and the objectives achieved were outlined. At the end of the briefing, the Logistics Commander toured the facilities, paying particular attention to the NIRMAS (Non-Ionising Radiation Monitoring and Alarm System), the innovative “System for Monitoring and Surveillance of Exposure Levels to Electromagnetic Emissions” installed on the Squadron’s premises. The NIRMAS system, which has been fully operational since 27 November 2013, enables the detection, measurement and reporting of electromagnetic fields emitted by equipment operating in the radio band (100 MHz – 1 GHz) and in the radar band (1.2–1.4 GHz), in order to ensure that the sources used always comply with current regulations governing human exposure to these electromagnetic fields. The visit continued with a meeting with Dr Sergio Paolucci, Mayor of the City of Potenza Picena, and a distinguished delegation from the medical and scientific communities and local authorities. In particular, the following spoke: Dr Gianni Corvatta, Technical and Scientific Director of the Marche Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA Marche); Dr Tiziana Bentivoglio, Director of the Prevention Department at the Single Regional Health Authority (ASUR Marche); Dr Mirti Lombardi, Head of the Radiation/Noise Service at the Ancona Provincial Department of ARPA Marche; Dr Mauro Mariottini of the Regional Epidemiological Observatory of ARPA Marche; Dr Fabio Filippetti of the Regional Epidemiological Observatory of the Regional Health Agency. During the meeting, the specific features of the NIRMAS system were explained and a dialogue was initiated between the Armed Forces and local institutions with a view to outlining, in the near future, the procedures for communicating the monitoring data provided by the system. The visit to the Squadron concluded with the traditional exchange of crests and General Salvestroni’s signing of the Guest Book. The Logistics Commander subsequently visited the detachment of the Air Force’s Foreign Languages School at Porto Potenza to observe one of the training phases for “firefighting” personnel, as well as the selection test in the so-called “smoke chamber”, a state-of-the-art training facility of the Logistics Command’s Support Service. At the end of the meetings, General Salvestroni, whilst thanking his hosts for their hospitality, expressed his sincere appreciation for the professionalism demonstrated by the personnel at the organisations visited, emphasising the importance of the work carried out in support of the Armed Forces’ operational activities.
