The mission conducted by the raiders of the 17th Wing of the Italian Air Force in Afghanistan, as part of 'Operation Sarissa,” has concluded positively.”
The 17th Raiders Wing participated, for the sixth consecutive year, in the operation named “Sarissa”, after the spear of the Macedonian phalanx, conducted together with the other three Special Forces Units: the 9th Col Moschin Regiment, the Navy Raiders Group and the Carabinieri G.I.S., under NATO control.
The “Special Operations” conducted outside the area by “ICARO 30” concerned military assistance activitymilitary assistanceSpecial units of the Afghan Police Force, useful in providing them with the ability to independently develop and manage national security in the country. The Commander, after congratulating the personnel on their achievements, wished them a swift recovery of their energy, in order to face the next exercise “Dark Night”, which will see them engaged, in a joint forces context and under the aegis of the Joint Special Forces Operations Command (COFS), for the maintenance of full operational capability within NATO.
The 17th Raiders Wing ensures, 24 hours a day, the readiness of Special Forces operators for their potential intervention in direct actions against strategic objectives, special reconnaissance and military assistance to the Armed Forces of foreign countries. All this while maintaining its nature as a strategic force multiplier of national Air Power, in an international operational context characterised by an “asymmetrical” threat. This type of mission requires highly specialised and trained personnel, capable of responding promptly to the most complex operational requirements.
