General of Air Squadron Roberto Corsini was welcomed by the Commander of the 41st Wing, Colonel Dario Antonio Missaglia. On his arrival, General Corsini was received by the Wing Commander, Colonel Dario Antonio Missaglia. In the initial stages of the visit, the Director attended an informational briefing on the 41st Wing, with particular focus placed on the Wing's personnel and the process of “phase out”of the Atlantic aircraft.
After visiting the main airport facilities, the visit concluded with the exchange of crests and the signing of the Visitors“ Book, where General Corsini stated "The best wishes for the future of the Wing, with the new weapon systems that will soon be delivered, and well done for the recent successes achieved both during Operation “Unified Protector” linked to the Libyan crisis and for the hospitality provided to civil flight operations at Catania Fontanarossa International Airport, whose runway had been closed for extraordinary requalification works.”.
The 41st Wing, equipped with Breguet 1150 Atlantic aircraft, ensures the counteraction of underwater and naval threats and provides long-range sea search and rescue services. Added to these activities is also the monitoring of merchant traffic in the Mediterranean, within the framework of “post 9/11” operations against international terrorism. The Atlantics are, in fact, capable of independently conducting systematic searches over the entire Mediterranean area.
The 41st Wing is also responsible for the air traffic control of the Catania Control Zone, within which, in addition to Sigonella military airport, lies Catania Fontanarossa civil airport, which handles over 200 movements per day.
